A word from Geti

This is cross-posted from the forums:

Trust me, we’re as frustrated with this taking as long as it is as you are. We were literally aiming for a feb1 release from the new year, but a lot has happened to push the release back. I’d go into it but it’d bore you as it’s just related to programming issues.

While MM battles with the multiplayer side of things and makes sure all the code is cross-platform compatible I’ve been going around and addressing a lot of the other bugs in-game, like bombs not going through windows properly, bomb jumping being retardedly overpowered, squeezing (i tested with one of those door-teleporters you see in public servers, they don’t work any more thank god) and a few others, and MM has also fixed elevatorjumping, workshops not working with someone in front of them, some issues with hit detection.. I have also set up things like per-player IP and score logging for a server, fixed the whitelist/blacklist code, changed the way bombs damage terrain (which will likely happen again once the build goes public if it rapes dirt too much), tweaked some of the graphics, and I’ll be working on fixing or changing /ban and /unban soon. We really just need to make sure the multiplayer mode isn’t too prone to exploits this time around, tweak how the maps are laid out, fix three AI issues and push it out.

We’ve been crunching since February started, it’s been a hell of a ride.

Enter King Arthur’s Gold

There is a well established trend in creating computer games these days. This trend is to make a game NOT fun at all. This happened a while ago and we haven’t noticed it because it didn’t happen suddenly. It was a slow degradation.

How did it happen? I think because game developers forgot what games are meant for. Modern video games have in the essence become movies with rendered graphics. You only control how fast the movie progresses.

How many times have you bought a game thinking it delivered what it promised, only to experience the same repetitive gameplay over and over? These games are developed with a trailer in mind. Game companies try to blind you with flashy effects and trick you into buying the game – NOT fun.

The good news is that this trend is starting to reverse. The successes of indie games like Minecraft in the last year, tell us that millions of gamers are tired of mainstream games and are beginning to see what games should be like and what they themselves enjoy most. This is the beginning of a revolution. A revolution that will show you what video games were always meant to be…

This is where King Arthur’s Gold comes in.

This game is my dream come true. My name is Michal Marcinkowski and I am a single coder and game designer who used to draw simple war games on pieces of paper with friends at school. All my life I have been looking to experience that simple wonder and fun on a computer. So much freedom from something so simple. Few games come close. That’s why I decided to make them myself. The pencil doodles have come to life and you too can experience the sheer fun of it. This is the only point of my games. To have as much fun as possible.

King Arthur’s Gold – affectionately known as KAG – is a unique build’n’kill game. KAG lets you use siege engines and catapults to knock down castles in randomly generated medieval worlds. It lets you mine for gold and set traps. Cooperate with your friends and watch as the meticulously-built enemy fortress topples down on the tiny pixel heads of your foes. It’s bloody fun. It’s Free. And hey… King Arthur’s Gold has ZOMBIES! You haven’t seen anything if you haven’t played this game.

KAG is a perfect blend of the coolest aspects of the latest indie games. Mine, build and fight real people in real-time. Use castles, catapults, siege engines and traps to gain advantage. In KAG the environment is 100% interactive – everything can be built and everything can be destroyed.

KAG brings a new level of fun never-before-seen in a computer game. We all deserve to enjoy and have some REAL fun after years of being robbed of our time and money by shitty games.

As gamers..
We love to explore.
We love to build.
We love to fight.
We love to cooperate and compete with others.

Not with a scripted character that is being forced on us.

How many times have you been tricked into believing that a given next gen game will feature a revolutionary cooperative AI only to end being stuck in a corridor? A real person playing like you, interacting with you and striving to achieve a common goal is the only friend you will ever need. Playing with other people is fun. Destroying your enemies castle is fun. Watching them fall into your spike trap is fun. Dropping a rock on their head and seeing them make an angry face is FUN.

But that is not all. While most independent games focus on gameplay, they tend to forget about the graphics and do not appeal to the eye. That’s a mistake – the visuals are also important. And I’m not talking about bleeding-edge bloom effects that try to mimic reality here. We’re talking about special aesthetics, because that’s what counts. KAG is presented in beautiful hand-drawn pixel graphics. Every pixel is carefully picked and matched to create a unique visual experience and to paint a great story. A story of King Arthur and his knights trying to prevail over the evil enemy.

Experience a work of love that mixes mythological themes of grandiose battles and dreams of bravery and combines that with the best aspects of classic and future gaming trends that rock the very foundations of video game design.

This is King Arthur’s Gold. And you are invited to join the adventure.

MM’s blog

I started blogging more frequently on my personal blog http://mm.soldat.pl. I write there about things not directly related to KAG. It’s more about my current thoughts on game design and what I want games to be like.

KAG is one of the Essential Free Indie Games For Your PC

We got featured yesterday on G4TV.COM along with classics such as Cave Story and Dwarf Fortress in an article called “Essential Free Indie Games For Your PC”. This is really amazing that we’re getting this attention.

KAG is a completely free game right now and it offers an insane amount of fun. In a couple days we’ll have a patch ready with more new stuff for the free version and a completely new game mode for the paid version called:
 “Zombie Survival Adventure”

We just added a new payment option (most requested by players). You can now pay with Google Checkout (along with PayPal and Allopass).

Did I mention it’s still the special discounted price because the game is still in alpha? It costs only 9.99$ but the price will raise slightly after the mentioned patch is out. You can get it here.

Have fun,

MM

Wrapping up zombies

We are officially wrapping up the zombies build. Not adding anything more. Fixing and tweaking the most important things. Consulting with the few happy testers and heading straight to the bliss of release.

This is gonna be like 30% of what we plan this mode to have but since this is still alpha we want to push this out so that you can have some fun. I personally haven’t gone more than an hour before dying and without stuff to do. I think this wil be your first impression when you play the zombie mode – there’s so much to do! And we’ll add even more later :).

The free version will have lots of additions and improvements as a collateral of working on the zombies.

No concrete date of release sorry. Its gonna be released when no bugs are present.

PS. We’ve gone past build 300 days ago. This means KAG is officially 300 days old/young.

Quotes from Testing Day 1:

A selection of quotes from today’s testing, which will be ongoing until the build is released:

Now you know some of the people to pester for info I guess 😉 They’re sworn on pain of death not to distribute anything at this point though, except maybe some screenshots.

We’re entering the polishing phase of this build. It’s going to be a doozy, there’s so much stuff you’ll barely believe it… until you’re playing it all. We’ll keep you posted with more commentary as the days go on, hoping to have it wrapped up and ready by next week!

More stuff in next release

Next release aka “Zombies Release” will not only contain zombies. It will have numerous significant improvements which we have (briefly) or haven’t talked about really. Here’s some of them:

  • real light and darkness
  • new workshops and rooms
  • new items such as a keg (made in demolition workshop)
  • much better Bot AI with A* path finding
  • archer bots and other AI additions
  • localization/translation files

Sorry for being so brief but I’m really busy coding. I want this finished as much as you do.

New payment options?

The demand for getting KAG full version is growing and growing! We are very happy about this and we want everyone to be able to get it. PayPal is the most popular and easiest choice for paying us the couple bucks KAG costs but isn’t available for everyone. So what should be our next priority for adding a payment option?

Zombies Soon!

Soon enough you’ll be all like:

The zombies will be on your doorstep and you’ll be able to fight them as a team.

However, we’ve got to get some testing out of the way before that can happen – We’ll be working with a few core members of the community to make sure its as bug free as we can make it, as exploit proof as we can make it and balanced enough to keep you playing for weeks on end – while we continue porting over the old content to the new system to put an end to any and all of the wierd things that have been happening since B228.

We’re scheduling a tenatative release date for the week after next – I appreciate that that’s mid february rather than early but we’d rather make sure we’re getting it right. We may release early if we’re happy with it before then.

We’re going to keep the specifics of the mode under wraps – we want certain aspects of it to be a discovery for all of you. I’m sure some videos will make it out though 😉

In the next build there’ll be a few more fixes and miscellaneous features coming too, including some specifically requested by server owners – break_time_static working properly and a player list output to the filesystem each minute to name a few.

More info and some previews coming over the next week to tide you over.

Remember – the price raise ( $9.99 -> $12.50 ) will come at the same time as the release, if you want to snag KAG for under ten bucks its probably your last week 😉
